Steve Albiniwas a prolific American musician and audio engineer. Throughout his career, he recorded several thousand records and sound-engineered acclaimed albums like the Pixies' Surfer Rosa, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me, and Nirvana's In Utero.
Albini passed away in 2024, and music fans and the industry have continued to honor his legacy. A few months after his passing, a street on Belmont Avenuewas named after the Chicago-based musician. Friends, family, neighbors, and musicians from across the country to commemorate the occasion.
Albini moved to Chicago in 1980 to get a degree in journalism at Northwestern University. Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, who proposed the commemoration, also stated that Albini's legacy should be honored beyond the street naming, including with programs and funding from the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and in public schools.
Meanwhile, Albini's wife, filmmaker Heather Whinna, also spoke at the unveiling. The filmmaker worked alongside Ramirez-Rosa on the honorary street designation. Whinna also hopes to create an organization called The Steve Albini Way, which would be an umbrella for both the recording studio and the couple's nonprofit, Letters to Santa.

Who was Steve Albini?

It's no wonder that Albini's music legacy is so honored in Chicago. It was while he was a student at Northwestern that Albini formed the punk rock band Big Black in 1981. They disbanded after extensive touring, and their popularity caught the attention of Led Zeppelin lead singer and lyricist Robert Plant, who later chose Albini to produce Walking Into Clarksdale, his album with Jimmy Page.

Beyond his musical career, Albini maintained a food blog documenting meals he had cooked for Whinna. He even appeared on the food show Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Steve Albini and poker

Albini was especially a fan of competing in mixed poker games. The musician's wins at the World Series of Poker tournamentsin 2018 and 2022 included a first place finish in a $1,500 stud event for $105,629, as well as a $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event in 2022 for $196,089. In a PokerNews article in 2022, Albini describes poker as part of his livelihood, but not a profession. Albini described his poker journey as something he tries to take seriously, with a focus on WSOP tournaments and some informal cash games in Chicago. His poker career coincided with some of poker's greatest players, including 2003 WSOP Champion Chris Moneymaker.
While Albini balanced his poker-playing with his music career, Moneymaker went on to focus on the professional circuit, working alongside top US pokersite, Americas Cardroom, to make online poker more accessible to players around the world. Still, Albini seemed to share the sentiment and helped spread the word of poker to as many as he could.
On top of Albini's years of WSOP experience, a writer for AV Club shared his experience of being taught how to play poker by Albini. This was after Albini had engineered a four-track EP for the writer's band at Electrical Audio, Albini's two-studio complex in Chicago. In his piece, the writer recalled how Albini had agreed to call him to walk him through the game. The call included talks of poker strategies and poker book recommendations.

Albini's WSOP player profile indicates that he began playing poker in 1969 when he was taught by his great-grandmother. In the years leading up to his passing, Albini participated in WSOP tournaments as early as 2010. His 2022 WSOP participation and win coincided with those of other poker legends like the aforementioned Chris Moneymaker, albeit in separate events.

Steve Albini and music

Of course, a large chunk of Albini's life consists of music production and sound engineering. Albini's work and role in the 80s and 90s punk rock scenes were fueled not only by his talent but also by his opinion on the politics at the time. Previously, he had spoken on the punk underground's intersections with other underground scenes in 80s Chicago, including the local queer community.
In an interview with producer and engineer Bobby Owsinski, Albini talks about the details of his sound engineering process, including how to properly mic pianos, from his go-to Neumann SM 2 stereo mic. Due to the piano's sound signature, Albini also likes to shuffle different mics in and out to get a more "normal" stereo image. Notably, Albini spoke about how it's much harder to deal with instruments like the piano in the studio, as having the mic close to the strings on those instruments may lead to "funny" sounds.

Throughout his career, Albini insists he doesn't see himself as a record producer. Instead, he mainly described himself as an audio engineer, leaving creative decisions to the artists he worked with. Albini had the strong opinion that producers in charge "often destroyed records". On the other hand, the role of a recording engineer was to solve technical problems, making sure the different sounds and instruments meshed well. Albini had engineered 1,500 records in 2004, and several thousand more by 2018.
Today, the list of Albini's original musicand extensive recording work and collaborations include his work on his own bands Big Black and Shellac, as well as songsfor Nirvana, the Pixies, Mogwai, and Code Orange. Shellac's first studio album in a decade, To All Trains, was posthumously released following Albini's passing.
